SUMMER 2024
In the summer of July 2023, a group of romantics converged in Chengdu, then left the city and traveled deep into Aba in western Sichuan. They were stationed in Shangguan Village in Mao County for half a month, recording the sunrise chasing in the mountains, painting checkerboard flowers, sampling the sound of the wind traveling through the valley, and recording the Qiang language to the sound of Qiang flutes. They were future poets, artists, directors, musicians, architects, but in that high summer, they were adventurers and creators. An interdisciplinary, inter-media and cross-cultural art experiment kicked off in the mountains.

Shangguan Village is under the jurisdiction of Fushun Township, Mao County, Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province. Under the fixed-point assistance of China Electric Chengdu Hospital and the unremitting efforts of the government and people at all levels, Shangguan Village has seen a new look in recent years. Now for the construction of modern, beautiful environment, “Flower Valley Village”. Centering on the poverty alleviation brand of “Blossoming Shangguan”, this ancient core land of Qiang culture is being revitalized on the way of integrating humanities and nature, economy and people's livelihood.
茂县，隶属四川省阿坝藏族羌族自治州，位于四川省西北部、青藏高原东南边缘，是全国最大的羌族聚居县，占全县总人口的92%。茂县为羌文化核心地区，名胜古迹有羌乡古寨（国家AAAA级景区）、叠溪·松坪沟、九顶山、黑虎羌寨碉楼群、土地岭国家森林公园等。本次活动我们也会在茂县政府相关人员的带领下参观以上地点。茂县也有众多非遗传承人，千百年来传承着如如羌族多声部民歌、羌族羊皮鼓舞、羌年等非物质文化遗产名录。我们将会与羌族艺术家携手，让传统文化焕发新生。
Mao County, under the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province, is located in northwestern Sichuan Province, the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, is the country's largest Qiang settlement county, accounting for 92% of the county's total population. Mao County is the core area of Qiang culture, attractions and monuments are Qiangxiang Ancient Walled City (National AAAA Scenic Spot), Folding Creek-Songping Gully, Jiuding Mountain, Heihu Qiangzhai Watchtower Complex, and Land Ridge National Forest Park. In this activity, we will also visit the above locations under the guidance of the relevant personnel of the government of Mao County. There are also many intangible cultural heritages in Mao County, which have been passed down for thousands of years, such as Qiang multi-part folk songs, Qiang sheepskin drum dance, Qiang New Year and other intangible cultural heritages. We will work hand in hand with Qiang artists to revitalize the traditional culture.

In the past year, Ken Wu's documentary on the Qiang language and Ouyang Leyi's sound artwork have revealed the strong connection between the Qiang language and daily life and folktales. This year's art residency program will further promote the preservation and transmission of the Qiang language. We will work closely with linguists, Qiang language inheritors and Qiang residents to explore the potential of digital tools in preserving this unwritten language. In addition, based on the Ermawen design of the Qiang's unique goat-horn and cloud patterns, we will design Qiang language and Ermawen creative products with reference to the path of promotion of women's books, and produce products full of educational and cultural heritage significance.

We will explore how to drive traffic and generate commercial revenue for local communities through creative art. We plan to activate commercial activities (e.g. ethnic festivals, lodging operations, and specialty agricultural products) and enhance tourism attraction in Qiang villages through public art projects (e.g. graffiti walls, sculptures, and large-scale installations) and branding design.
On this trip, we hope to empower rural revitalization with art. We hope to decorate new villages with art, stimulate the economy with culture and creativity, and to create and share this freedom with the local people in the vast land. The works created by the artists around “Blossom Shangguan” will lead the local customs here out of the mountains and towards the world, so that more people can hear the beautiful Qiang sound from the mountains, and more hearts yearning for the freedom of the mountains and forests from the “digital Qiang realm” to the “digital Qiang realm”. Let more people hear the beautiful Qiang sounds from the deep mountains, and let more hearts yearning for the freedom of the mountains and forests move from “Digital Qiang Land” to “Blossoming Shangguan”. Your participation will have a far-reaching impact on this land and the people who have inhabited it for generations.

参与条件｜ 对艺术共创、乡村振兴、羌族文化、在地文化及社区营造有浓厚兴趣。能够投入7天左右的生活在茂县，创作与“数字羌境”主题相关的作品。对质朴纯粹的乡村生活方式有向往，并愿意深度参与当地的艺术与公共教育活动。
驻地费用｜本项目为非盈利性质，致力于支持艺术家的创作并促进当地社区的经济发展。为了实现项目的运营、制作和推广，我们设定的驻地费用为每期2800元人民币或380美元。参与者仅需自理往返成都的交通。我们将在成都集合享用美食后，一起乘坐今年刚通车的动车🚄前往茂县开启艺术之旅。此费用将全面覆盖您在上关村驻地期间的各种必需开销，包括但不限于：

We want you | Young artists & young scholars who are in college or have just graduated. Engaged in the field of 3D art, sound art, video, theater, performance, new media art and design, regardless of art disciplines. Researchers are also welcome to participate in this year's residency.
Participation Requirements｜ Strong interest in art co-creation, rural revitalization, Qiang culture, local culture and community building. Be able to spend about 7 days in Mao County to create works related to the theme of “Digital Qiang”. Have a desire for a simple and pure rural lifestyle, and be willing to participate in local art and public education activities.
Residency Fee｜This is a non-profit program dedicated to supporting artists' creativity and promoting the economic development of the local community. In order to operate, produce and promote the program, we have set a residency fee of 2,800 RMB or 380 USD per session. Participants are only responsible for their own transportation to and from Chengdu. We will meet in Chengdu for a gourmet meal and then travel together on a moving train which just opened this year, to Mao County to start the art journey. This fee will fully cover all necessary expenses during your residency at ShangGuanCun, including but not limited to:
- Comfortable detached bed and breakfast
- Creative space studio and art-making tools
- Authentic farmhouse cuisine and special Qiang barbecue party
- Tickets and transportation arrangements
- Camping equipment
We understand that participating in international art programs can be financially stressful. If you are concerned about finances, please put “Financial Aid” in the subject line of your application. We offer up to 100% fee waivers and invite you to participate in the day-to-day operations and volunteer activities of the residency to create a creative and friendly arts environment.
