Three enthusiastic graduates of New York University's Interactive Media Arts programme (Rainee Wang, Mia Zhang, Hazel Yuan) initiated the ‘Blossom Lilies - Digital Qiang Garden’ art residency programme last summer. With the vision and goal of art empowering rural revitalisation and bringing nationalism to the world stage, they organised and advocated for the project, which was co-organised by Shuai Bo Sports and the Youth League Committee of CECC, hosted by the government of Fushun Township in Mao County and the Youth League Committee of Shangguan Village, and supported academically by the Department of Interactive Media Arts at the New York University in Shanghai. With the support of the wider community, the residency programme was able to provide the participating artists with a 10-day on-site art-making experience, including full venue support, accommodation, a vibrant co-creation community and creative vitality, providing them with a unique environment, resources and platform for their artistic exploration and creation.
At the end of June 2023, the Digital Qiang Garden Art Residency Programme invited applications from over 40 young artists from internationally renowned art schools including Central Saint Martins, New York University, the Central University of Fine Arts, University of Southern California, Rice University, and the Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute. After reviewing the portfolios, evaluating the creative programmes and conducting auditions, nine artists with interdisciplinary and innovative strengths were selected and invited to travel to Shangguan Village, Mao County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China, to engage in creative explorations in the embrace of nature.

During the 10-day residency, the resident artists combined the inspiration they gained during their trip with their own personal expertise, crossing the boundaries of the medium to engage in an in-depth artistic dialogue with the ancient heritage of the Qiang people. They have filmed documentary photographs of the Qiang language heritage, created outdoor installations on the theme of nature worship, compiled albums of embroidery art, and reimagined traditional embroidery patterns using 3D technology. These diverse and innovative artistic practices not only deepen the artists' connection with the Qiang community, but also leave their creative mark on this resilient land. This creation explores how art can empower rural revitalisation and demonstrates the unlimited potential of artistic expression in social development.

The New Sun is a nature worship ceremony that celebrates the symbol of the sun in Qiang culture.

Installation
All Artist
The installation is inspired by the winds of the wilderness, carrying the moisture of the rain, as if the checkerboard flower had been planted in the desert. She is free, uninhibited, floating freely between heaven and earth. What force could confine such a wind? This nature art installation depicts the creativity of the gods. Another part of the installation comes from the mist in the forest, which is a part of all living things.

With their exquisite embroidery skills, Qiang women vividly depict the vibrancy of nature with every stitch. They use bright silk threads to outline the graphic language that has been passed down from generation to generation.
设计师们在观察和学习村落的自然生态和羌族的传统刺绣图案的同时,也将现代设计哲学融入其中,以纹身贴纸的方式,尝试实现了对可穿戴文化遗产的全新理解和探索。
While observing and learning from the natural ecology of the village and the traditional embroidery patterns of the Qiang people, the designers have also integrated modern design philosophy into them, and tried to realize a new understanding and exploration of wearable cultural heritage in the form of tattoo stickers.

At the end of January 2024, Artist-in-Residence Rainee Wang (a graduate student in Educational Technology at Harvard University) led a diverse team to participate in the MIT Reality Hack at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). During the two-day competition, the team developed an innovative AR Google Maps plug-in that transforms urban green spaces into “virtual Qiang embroidery gardens,” allowing users to interactively learn about the cultural heritage of the Qiang people during their daily commute. The use of this technology not only enhances public awareness of Qiang culture, but also demonstrates the harmonious combination of modern technology and traditional culture.
