Three enthusiastic graduates of New York University's Interactive Media Arts programme (Rainee Wang, Mia Zhang, Hazel Yuan) initiated the ‘Blossom Lilies - Digital Qiang Garden’ art residency programme last summer. With the vision and goal of art empowering rural revitalisation and bringing nationalism to the world stage, they organised and advocated for the project, which was co-organised by Shuai Bo Sports and the Youth League Committee of CECC, hosted by the government of Fushun Township in Mao County and the Youth League Committee of Shangguan Village, and supported academically by the Department of Interactive Media Arts at the New York University in Shanghai. With the support of the wider community, the residency programme was able to provide the participating artists with a 10-day on-site art-making experience, including full venue support, accommodation, a vibrant co-creation community and creative vitality, providing them with a unique environment, resources and platform for their artistic exploration and creation.
Following last year’s Digital Qiang Garden Art Residency Programme, this journey into the mountains by a new generation of young artists begins once again. In August 2024, a group of new faces gathered in Chengdu. Among them are recent graduates from art academies as well as interdisciplinary practitioners active in design, fashion, architecture, film, music, and painting. This summer, they set out westward from cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and New York, heading deep into the heart of Aba Prefecture in western Sichuan. In Shangguan Village—a place where the Qiang people have lived for generations—the artists settled in for ten days, embarking on a journey of symbiosis with the land, its sounds, language, culture, and memory.

During the 10-day residency, the resident artists combined the inspiration they gained during their trip with their own personal expertise, crossing the boundaries of the medium to engage in an in-depth artistic dialogue with the ancient heritage of the Qiang people. They have filmed documentary photographs of the Qiang language heritage, created outdoor installations on the theme of nature worship, compiled albums of embroidery art, and reimagined traditional embroidery patterns using 3D technology. These diverse and innovative artistic practices not only deepen the artists' connection with the Qiang community, but also leave their creative mark on this resilient land. This creation explores how art can empower rural revitalisation and demonstrates the unlimited potential of artistic expression in social development.
ART WORKS
Every culture is rooted in its land, and Qiang culture is deeply intertwined with nature. During my field research in Maoxian, I was particularly struck by the vast fields of gesang flowers swaying in the wind. Inspired by these flowers, I created a painting stand to display a series of small works produced during the trip. Through this piece, I hope to bring the local folk spirit and natural environment—those elements that left the strongest impression on me—into this digital garden.

Rrmea(尔玛) is a text system created by the younger generation of the people of Qiang(羌), an ethnic minority group in China, to record their culture, which has remained completely oral for thousands of years. This work is a multi-media installation based on Qiang's witchcraft ritual and historical belief, highlighting the bond between an endangered culture and its transformation into new forms of existence.
Poem translation:
"Before you lies a sheep, Feasting on our sacred scriptures.
It swallows each and every text, as the words weave across its skin.
When that skin is stretched into a drum, Played by the hands of our Shibi(wizard), Our culture's stories,
Will be told in the echos, on and on."

Qiang women weave intricate patterns on the loom, and we invite the audience to participate in this process by drawing and interacting with the designs. The system will automatically generate new Qiang embroidery patterns in real time based on the audience's creations.
3D-printed flowers, enhanced with digital projection, showcase pure geometric forms on a white background, with color added through projection. The artist uses minimalist design to highlight the essence of flowers - growth and blossoming. As viewers touch the flowers and petals, hidden colors emerge at their fingertips, and the flowers come to life through shifting light and shadow.

The Digital Qiang Garden Music ID Card is an audio visualization of music and sounds collected in Mao County (fE). This music ID card layers a collage of audio wheels inspired by traditional Qiang embroidery, using digital weaving techniques to visually represent each sound piece. The audio includes instrumental performances with the sheepskin drum(羊皮鼓), Qiang flute(羌笛), and kou xian(口弦), as well as vocal arrangements from artists such as Shibi Ensemble (#/ta), women's duets, male solos, and native-language chants by women. Ambient sounds from daily village life, including the street vendor calls of Shangguan Village, also contribute to bringing an immersive sense of place. The ID card was created during the artist residency, incorporating new recordings alongside sound pieces from last year's project, Words Floating on the Clouds by Leyi Ouyang. The QR code on the postcard links to a playlist of the Digital Qiang Garden.

Kong Yue: This project was an inspiring collaboration with students from the China Academy of Art's Fashion Department (Deng Jingjing, Huang Mianhang, Zhang Siyu). With pure-hearted and highly creative artistic expression, they built a bridge to connect with Qiang culture. Using a mosaic format, we embedded our hopes for a beautiful life into the pattern design. Each individual pattern is like a "melody," carrying unique blessings and auspicious meanings. We skillfully strung these
"melodies" together, creating a harmonious symphony with the Erma of the Qiang people, resonating through the clouds.
Deng Jingjing: Standing atop the clouds, I witnessed the vibrant dance between the natural spirit of Qiang culture and the life force of microbial cells, merging and moving together lightly. It was as though they were composing a beautiful melody of harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature before my eyes.
Huang Mianhang: I contemplated teeth, the hardest bones in the human body, symbolizing resilience and immortality to me. Much like the deep reverence for nature in Qiang civilization, and its solemn respect for life and death, I deeply felt how their culture interweaves with nature, continuing to thrive in an unbroken legacy.
Zhang Siyu: Immersed in the art of cosmetics, I sensed its core focus on humanity, showcasing the beauty of the human body-much like the Qiang people's exuberant life force. As a decorative art, makeup connects with Qiang patterns, both highlighting an unending pursuit of beauty and carrying our deep longing for a beautiful life.
