SUMMER 2023

Three enthusiastic graduates of New York University's Interactive Media Arts programme (Rainee Wang, Mia Zhang, Hazel Yuan) initiated the ‘Blossom Lilies - Digital Qiang Garden’ art residency programme last summer. With the vision and goal of art empowering rural revitalisation and bringing nationalism to the world stage, they organised and advocated for the project, which was co-organised by Shuai Bo Sports and the Youth League Committee of CECC, hosted by the government of Fushun Township in Mao County and the Youth League Committee of Shangguan Village, and supported academically by the Department of Interactive Media Arts at the New York University in Shanghai. With the support of the wider community, the residency programme was able to provide the participating artists with a 10-day on-site art-making experience, including full venue support, accommodation, a vibrant co-creation community and creative vitality, providing them with a unique environment, resources and platform for their artistic exploration and creation.

At the end of June 2023, the Digital Qiang Garden Art Residency Programme invited applications from over 40 young artists from internationally renowned art schools including Central Saint Martins, New York University, the Central University of Fine Arts, University of Southern California, Rice University, and the Jingdezhen Ceramics Institute. After reviewing the portfolios, evaluating the creative programmes and conducting auditions, nine artists with interdisciplinary and innovative strengths were selected and invited to travel to Shangguan Village, Mao County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, China, to engage in creative explorations in the embrace of nature.

SUMMER 2024

In August 2024, a group of new faces gathered in Chengdu. They came from different cities and backgrounds, yet shared similar questions: How can art truly engage with local communities? How can it co-create with regional cultures? And in this digital age, can it offer new possibilities for sustaining Qiang cultural memory?

Following last year’s “Blossoming at Shangguan: Digital Qiang Garden” residency project, this mountain journey of young artists sets off once again. Among them are recent graduates from art schools, as well as interdisciplinary practitioners active in design, fashion, architecture, film, music, and painting. This summer, they departed from cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, and New York, heading westward into the heart of Aba in western Sichuan. In Shangguan Village—a place where the Qiang people have lived for generations—the artists stayed for ten days, embarking on a journey of symbiosis with the land, its sounds, language, and memory.

During the 10-day residency, the artists immersed themselves in Qiang villages, interviewing artisans who have passed down their crafts for generations and studying the patterns and techniques of traditional embroidery. They collected the sounds of Qiang music and folk instruments echoing through the valleys, and recorded the chants and prayers of shibi (ritual) ceremonies. Listening to a language without written form being transmitted orally, they sought to respond to the deeply rooted cultural memory of the mountains through video and installation art.
